Broadway In Chicago Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards

We are proud to announce Broadway In Chicago’s 2020 Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards: 24 Outstanding Students. Due to COVID-19, our regional program along with the national program, The Jimmy Awards, was canceled but we worked to do everything we could to acknowledge these talented students. This year, all submissions were reviewed by video only. It has been a difficult time for theatre and all our participating schools, teachers, program directors and students as many of their shows were canceled.

Although we had to cancel the most exciting day of the year for Broadway In Chicago, we are still recognizing the top submissions based on their excellence in musical theatre and a clear commitment to their role, whether they were able to perform for an audience or not. We would like to thank all our participating schools and the 200+ students for their submissions and continued support for our program. We look forward to when we are able to be together again and carry out our program in its entirety.

Thank You for your continued participation in the Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards.

Due to COVID-19 this year’s program has been altered and will recognize the 24 Outstanding Actors and Actresses. IHSMTA has suspended all 2020 production awards.

Broadway In Chicago is delighted to have high schools across the State of Illinois to participate in the Ninth Annual Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards sponsored by NBC 5. The Broadway In Chicago Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards (IHSMTA) celebrate excellence in high school theatre throughout the State of Illinois.

The categories include Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Production presented by Guardian Music Travel, Best Direction, Best Scenic Design presented by SPL, Best Choreography and Best Ensemble presented by Jimmy John’s. Twenty-four nominees (12 actors and 12 actresses) will receive tickets to a Broadway In Chicago show, participate in a workshop with a theater professional, and perform on stage at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place (175 E. Chestnut) in front of Chicago casting agents and theater professionals.

From the twenty-four nominees, two Illinois award recipients (one Best Actor, one Best Actress) will go on an all-expense paid trip to New York City to represent the State of Illinois at The Jimmy Awards® and participate in a week-long theatre intensive of coaching and rehearsals with industry professionals in preparation for a one-night-only showcase on Broadway, where a panel of judges crowns the nation’s top performers. The Jimmy Awards® are named for legendary Broadway theater owner and producer James M. Nederlander. Broadway In Chicago is a Nederlander presentation and is excited to join the network of theatres across the country participating in The Jimmy Awards®.
